Protect The Integrity Of Evidence
If you suspect elements of your IT infrastructure have been used to commit a fraud against you, either directly or through the use of a computer or internet connection, it’s important to act fast to recover as much evidential information as possible. Most importantly, it’s important to have a computer forensics expert do it, so the evidence recovered can be used in a court of law if necessary.
Computer forensics – exposing exploited business IT infrastructure
While the growth in crime associated with the increased opportunity widespread proliferation of technology and data presents, it’s often the ‘humble’ computer where the crime may first be discovered and where our computer forensics service may begin.
In the simplest sense, the computer on somebody’s desk, just became a crime scene, hence the reason to adopt a forensic approach. The crime may be hacking or a denial of service attack against somebody else, or email phishing. The computer may have been used to instigate a crime such as being the originating source of a hack or the access point somebody perpetrated a fraud. It may, then, contain information useful in proving the complicity of the owner of user, provided the necessary data can be accessed without compromising its forensic integrity.
Simply deleting an email or document, or even in some instances ‘erasing’ a hard drive may not actually destroy the document of interest. It may still be recoverable. More importantly, records that hold data about the document may still be intact. Simply deleting files doesn’t necessarily delete the actual data. Over time the data gets written over, but short term it may be recoverable, that’s why it’s important to act fast and carefully.
Commonly, this data, called meta data, holds information such as the date and time it was created, edited or deleted, maybe even who the logged in user was at the time. Preserving this information is crucial.
