EU fraud investigation conceptFollowing in the wake of the Facebook and Cambridge Analytica data scandal, new accusations have been raised. This time Facebook is in the clear, as Cambridge Analytica continues to flail madly in the spotlight. Accusations have also moved across the pond from the US to the UK, with whistleblower Christopher Wylie, a previous employee of Cambridge Analytica, suggesting to MPs earlier last week that the EU referendum was won fraudulently.

According to Wylie, Vote Leave inappropriately channelled money through Aggregate IQ (AIQ), a tech firm with clear links to Cambridge Analytica, in order to “get around election spending laws”. Wylie highlighted the unusual coincidence of four pro-Brexit groups – Vote Leave, BeLeave, Veterans for Britain, and Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist party – using AIQ’s services to target voters online.

Vote Leave has denied all allegations of overspending and breaking the electoral law. However, Wylie claims that Vote Leave donated £625,000 to BeLeave during the campaign, which was then spent on hiring services from AIQ. If this is the case, Vote Leave would have spent more than the £7m election limit, even though they have officially stated that they only spent £6.77m on their leave campaign.

With less than a year to go before Britain officially leaves the EU, issues surrounding the referendum are sending MPs into a tizzy. The leave campaign has reiterated their innocence but the Electoral Commission is currently investigating the allegations. No one is certain what it will mean for Brexit if the allegations prove to be true.
